It has been aired at 4 AM every last day of Pitri Paksha. Once in 1976 , an attempt was taken to change the content . In fact Mahanayak Uttam Kumar was invited as a presenter and also to to chant the shlokas in place of Birendra Krishna Bhadra. New songs were composed by Hemant Kumar Mukherjee sung by the same artistes. However this content was rejected by Bengalis across the globe . Mahishashurmardini, or Mahalaya as we commonly call, signals the advent of the celebrations and any Bengali residing in any part of the world, waits for the divine moment by listening to the voice of Birendra Krishna Bhadra chanting the shlokas, listening to a galaxy of singers doling out melodious numbers composed by Pankaj Kumar Mullick and scripted by Bani Kumar. Certain songs like *Bajlo Tomar Alor Benu* , *Ogo Amar Agomoni* , *Jago tumi Jago* and *Tobo Achintyo* by Supreeti Ghosh, Sipra Bose, Dwijen Mukherjee, Manabendra Mukherjee became a part and parcel of Bengali’s life. It practically became the audio favourite around which every Bengali would hear or overhear (as it is played in many neighbourhood loudspeakers too) from 4 a.m. The last live took place in 1958 when the production was recorded for perpetuity. The icons who are indispensible to the Bengali culture, and will remain so till the last day of civilisation and perhaps, even beyond.
