Durgapujo History

According to Hindu mythology, Adi Shakti—Devi—is the Supreme power. The Devi Bhagawatam tells that Adi shakti is the original creator, observer and destroyer of the whole universe. She is formed from (Lord Brahma),(Lord Vishnu) and (Lord Shiva).

In Shiv Puran she is incarnated in part Lord Shiva. Skanda Puran and Markandeya Puran tells about Durga or Chandi as divine mother of all creation. In Devi Bhagwatam she is goddess Bhuvaneshvari. Owner of this universe. She then incarnated in front of Lord Shiva in the form of Sidhidaatri. The same puran Parvati, the goddess of power and beauty,Adi Para shakti is also considered to be the truly supreme spirit.

In Devi Puran, In Vedas it is written that worship of Sun as the ultimate source of energy and Adi Shakti transform the soul in the body. She incarnated various form of Shakti from Brahma, Vishnu and Lord Shiva.

Durga Puja: A Festival of Home Coming

Throughout the year we await the worship of Devi Durga. In Hindu Mythology Devi is said to visit her home during the 4 days, the tradition continues when Sri Ramchandra created the Akalbodhan (untime awakening) of devi Chandi to defeat of Ravan. The win of good over evil and to purify our soul is the vital part of this celebration. Throughout the year our life is full of hazards and distress and this 4 days of Devi Paksha give life to us.

The creation starts at Kumartuli, or the potters place where Devi is build and ends in Bijoya Dashami where Devi returns to her’s home in Kailash is the common belief according to Hindu Mythology. The celebration almost starts from Mahalaya, slokas from Chandi of Markendeya Puran sounds in the air with the home coming of Devi. We feel our insight and the urge of Home Coming wherever we are. Thus the celebration of festival is the festival of Life, Soul and eternity.
