Nabin Bhaskar was born in Dainhat in Katwa of Burdwan District in 1806. His father was Ramchandra Bhaskar. From his childhood his creativity and skills in building statues was revealed. His father setup a shop named Oriental Stone works in Upper Chitpur Road in Kolkata. His mastery work includes the created of Bhavatarini Devi Kali at Dakshineswar at the age if 19. Initially Nabin created 2 idols which did not fit in the temple. Later he created the third idol which is the current idol at Dakshineswar which was ordered by Rani Rashmoni herself. The temple was inagaurated in the year 1855, 31 st May. It is a known fact that Nabin Bhaskar created and packed the idol in a box. It is believed that Rani Rashmoni had a dream that the idol was getting sweated in the box. The realism between God and human being was related. Later Sri Ramkrishna who was the priest of Dakshineswar had visualized the mother goddess through his intense prayers and dedication. This may sound unrealistic to many of the readers, but the existence of the Supreme Power can be felt if we believe in that. The idol was created from hard rock stone (black) brought from west Jamalpur. Three idols are created from the same rock. Now where are the other two idols now. The first idol is Brahmamoyee which is established at Pramanik Ghat Road in Baranagar in 1853, 2 years prior Bhabotarini idol was established at Dakshineswar. It was established by Ramgopal De and Durgaprasad De. Another idol is established and known as Nistarini Debi which is at Brindabon Bose Lane in North Kolkata in Goyabagan Road by Shivcharan Goho.
Apart from this his unique creation is the creation of the murti of Yogaadyaa at Kshirgram. Apart from the Burdwan Royal family,he was also commissioned by the royal families of Cossimbazar, Natore, Puntia,Rangpur, Dinajpur, Jemo,Muktagacha, Mymensingh, Manipur, Lalgarh to sculpt their grihadevatas. It is a fact that Maharani of Dinajpur was so overwhelmed at Nabin Bhaskar’s skill that she gifted him a golden chisel.
The next two generation carried on the legacy but eventually the present generation no longer does this amazing work. Nabin Bhaskar’s illustratious work is lost in consequence of time but he remains in his creation of his majestic work still today. The transformation of the beleif continues and God or Supreme power whatever you beleive resides in human beings and induces man kind for good work. Thus rightly said Nabin Bhaskar’s art was a gift of God.
